Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:
Wednesday, Oct. 31: At 2:43 pm a complainant reported a stray dog near S. Mulberry and E. Vest Sts. The officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility.
Tuesday, Oct. 30: At 5:05 pm an officer began investigating a sex abuse of a 14-year-old allegedly abused in Jefferson by a family member.
Monday, Oct. 29: At 1:25 am security staff at Wild Rose Casino requested assistance with an intoxicated female patron, who they needed assistance in removing. The officer arrived and met the female in the parking lot. The officer had the female arrange to be picked up by a family member and left her vehicle there. At 11:22 am officers were advised that the railroad crossing at Grimmell Rd had some chain on the crossing. The officer checked on the complaint and learned it was part of the actual track. Union Pacific was notified. At 12:45 pm a female student at GrCoHS was caught with a vaping device. The officer cited her for minor in possession of tobacco/vape product.
Sunday, Oct. 28: At 3:54 pm staff at A&W Family Restaurant reported a male attempted to pass a counterfeit $20 bill at the business. The male took off and left the bill when he was advised it was counterfeit. The store is gathering video for the officer of the event.
Saturday, Oct. 27: At 5:42 am staff at Casey’s General Store reported a shoplifting event. A male entered the store. He had two drink items in his hands as he walked through the business. He does not place one item back in store video, but only has one item at the counter when he paid. The officer spoke to the male suspect a short time later. He advised he placed the item on a candy shelf and only bought the one item. The store employees, or video of the encounter support this scenario. The male returned to the store later in the day and threw a $5 bill at the manager and apologized for the inconvenience. Charges are still pending against the male at this time. At 8:23 pm a complainant from California reported the possible theft of fuel from his airplane while it parked at the Jefferson Municipal Airport. The officer is investigating the reported event.
Friday, Oct. 26: At 12:11 pm staff at Greene County HS advised an officer that a male student had been caught with a vape product and a pocketknife in his possession at school. The student was given a 6-day suspension from school. The officer followed up with a citation for minor possessing tobacco/vapor products. At1:30 pm an officer investigated a two-vehicle property damage accident at the high school. Joseph Smith of Lohrville, operating a charter bus owned by Windstar Charter company sideswiped a vehicle parked in the lot. Damage to the bus and to the 2001 Pontiac Bonneville, owned by Jeff Lamoureux of Jefferson, was estimated at $2,000. No citation was issued because the collision occurred on private property. At 3:51 pm an officer investigated a two-vehicle property damage accident at the intersection of W. Harrison and S. Elm Sts. Brianna Osterson was westbound on Harrison St. She stopped as posted but entered Elm St into the path of a southbound vehicle driven by Maigan Haley of Jefferson. There were no injuries. Osterson was cited for failure to obey stop sign. Damage to her 2003 Oldsmobile Alero and to Hailey’s 2011 Dodge Caravan was estimated at $1,000. At 8:36 pm officers investigated a rear end accident on the overpass in the 600 block of N. Elm St. Michael Poggemiller of Burlington was northbound, followed by Ruth Fischer of Paton. Poggemiller’s 2010 Dodge Ram pickup truck was struck in the rear. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Ruth Fischer, 42, of Paton for operating while intoxicated- first offense*. She was cited for fail to stop within an assured clear distance ahead. Damage to her 2015 Nissan Altima was estimated at $2,000. Damage to Poggemiller’s pickup truck was estimated at $100.
Thursday, Oct. 25: At 4:53 pm an officer caught a stray dog in the 200 block of S. Chestnut St. The officer placed the animal in the animal holding facility. At 7:54 pm a complainant reported the theft of a pair of sunglasses from a residence in the 100 block of N. Walnut St on 10/18 during a party at the residence. The officer is investigating. At 9:39 pm during the investigation of the theft, an officer arrested Jacob Richard Michael Oleary, 25 of Ankeny on a Polk County warrant for criminal mischief- third degree and a Story County warrant for failure to appear*. Officers were attempting to speak to Oleary about the theft of the sunglasses when he fled from a residence in the 800 block of W. Monroe St. Officers located him a short time later and arrested him at the corner of N. Oak and W. State Sts.
Wednesday, Oct. 24: At 11:08 am an officer investigated a two-vehicle property damage accident in the parking lot at Greene County High School. Aidan Johnson of Jefferson was operating a 2005 Ford Taurus owned by Andrew Michaelson, also of Jefferson. He attempted to pull into a parking spot but struck a legally parked 2016 Jeep Cherokee owned by Amber Ricci of Jefferson. Damage to the Michaelson vehicle was estimated at $750. Damage to the Ricci vehicle was estimated at $1,000. No citation was issued as the accident occurred on private property. At 12:41 pm an officer responded to a two-vehicle property damage accident in the Dollar General parking lot. Kelly Wilson of Missouri was attempting to park her 2015 GMC Denali when she sideswiped a parked 1996 Buick Roadmaster owned by Robert Owens of Jefferson. Wilson was cited for failure to provide proof of security liability. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $1,000. At 6:16 pm a resident reported an abandoned bicycle in the 600 block of S. Maple St. The officer impounded the bike.

Monday, Oct. 22: At 3:59 am an officer responded to a fire alarm activation at Wild Rose Casino. There was no fire and it was determined to be a false alarm. At 4:47 pm an officer investigated a property damage accident at Dairy Queen. Elnor Black was backing from a parking spot onto Clark St but struck a passing vehicle driven by Matt Cummings. Black was cited for unsafe backing upon a highway. Damage to her 2009 Chevrolet Impala was estimated at $1,000. Damage to the vehicle Cummings was driving, a 1997 Chevrolet C15 owned by Chad Davis was estimated at $200. At 11:53 pm officers were called to a residence in the 200 block of W. Adams St for a reported kitchen fire. Officers arrived and the small fire was out, but the Jefferson fire department was dispatched to make sure it was fine. During the event, the officers determined an 18 year-old-male resident was extremely intoxicated in the residence. A charge of possession of alcohol underage is pending at this time.
Sunday, Oct. 21: At 3:22 pm a complainant reported locating a bottle of gasoline with a rag stuck in the top in the 800 block of N. Wilson. It is unknown how long the bottle had been there before being discovered.
Saturday, Oct. 20: At 8:55 pm staff at Wild Rose Casino spoke with an officer concerning a male subject at the casino who may be wanted. The office confirmed an outstanding Story County warrant for parole violation. Officers arrested Anthony Herbert Smith, 40, of Des Moines on the outstanding warrant. At 9:57 pm a complainant advised officers she had been assaulted by a know female at Wild Rose Casino. The officer photographed injuries from the reported event and is gathering a county attorney subpoena to obtain video of the event. Charges are pending.

Wednesday, Oct. 17: At 3:54 pm an officer investigated a two-vehicle property damage accident at Highway 30 and Mulberry St. Jacob Hagen of Jefferson was westbound on Highway 30. He stopped to yield to oncoming traffic and signaled to turn left onto Mulberry. Luella Miller of Boone was following Hagen; her vehicle struck the rear of his. Miller was cited for failure to stop in assured clear distance ahead. Damage to her 2006 Buick Lacrosse was estimated at $3,000. Damage to Hagen’s 2014 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was estimated at $500. At 5:25 pm staff at Casey’s General Store reported a theft of alcohol from the store. The store provided the officer with video of the theft. The female is well known to officers. Charges are pending.
Tuesday, Oct. 16: At 9 am a resident brought a stray dog to the LEC. The animal was placed in the animal holding facility.

Sunday, Oct. 14: At 3:31 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the 600 block of N. Wilson. Diego Rodriguez of Jefferson backed his 1995 Chevy 1500 pickup truck from a private drive but struck a legally parked 2008 Chrysler Town and Country minivan owned by Mona Sukovaty. Damage to the minivan was estimated at $1,200. Rodriguez was cited for unsafe backing upon a highway and failure to provide proof of security liability- accident related. His vehicle was not damaged. At 4 pm the LEC received several calls advising of a loud explosion near W. Monroe St and S. Grimmell Road. The officers determined a transformer was having issues and Alliant Energy was contacted.

Friday, Oct. 12: At 1:45 pm an officer was requested at the middle school for a violent student. The officer arrived and learned a 10-year-old male had destroyed the room, broken cell phones and computer equipment, and had assaulted the teacher. The student was taken to ER to be evaluated by a doctor. He was later transported to an out-of-county facility. The teacher was taken to the Greene County Medical Center ER for minor injuries. Juvenile arrest warrants have been requested for the student for disorderly conduct/violent behavior- simple, criminal mischief- second degree (Class D felony),and assault causing bodily injury (serious misdemeanor)*. At 8:52 pm a family member requested officers at the Jefferson Municipal Cemetery for a possible suicidal female. The officers were assisted by Greene County EMS. The family member advised they would take the female to the Boone County ER. She refused assistance from officers and Greene County EMS.
Thursday, Oct. 11: At 8:35 am officers assisted the sheriff’s office by placing all Jefferson schools into a brief lock down. The chief deputy lifted the lock down a short time later after determining it was safe to do so as he was dealing with a domestic situation. At 10:05 am an officer was flagged down by a male on crutches in the 700 block of N. Cedar St. The subject began yelling at the officer and challenging him to a fight. The officer maintained a safe distance while other officers were arriving. The male, Dean Emmet Salzwedel Jr, 39, of Ames, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct- simple*. At 3:43 pm while on school patrol an officer witnessed a male juvenile damaging a mirror on a vehicle parked at the high school. The officer made contact with the male. The vehicle’s owner was not supportive of criminal charges in the matter. The officer contacted the juvenile’s parent and made them aware of the situation.
Wednesday, Oct. 10: At 8:43 am a complainant reported her son’s skateboard had been taken on 10/06, he was at X-treme Skate Center. The officer is investigating. At 6:14 pm a resident requested a welfare check on a possible suicidal female. The officer made contact with the female and eventually transported her to ER to be evaluated by a medical doctor. At 6:45 pm the sheriff’s office requested assistance from officers in locating a possible suicidal female, possibly in Jefferson. The officer located the female and spoke to her. The information was passed to the deputy.
Tuesday, Oct. 9: At 8:05 am staff at Home Care Medical reported the theft of gasoline from a vehicle parked at the business. The officer is checking local camera footage. At 10:46 pm officers were requested at Greene County Middle School for a disruptive student. A 10-year-old male was charged in juvenile court with disorderly conduct and criminal mischief- fifth degree. At 11:10 am two more Greene County High School students were caught with Juul vaping devices. The two male students were given a three-day suspension from school and cited for possession of tobacco/vaping products.

Sunday, Oct. 7: ***** As a result of an investigation started on 9/18, warrants were requested for Michelle Marie Fritch of Nevada and Brent Eugene Leon Allen of Ames for theft- fourth degree*. ***** As a result of an investigation started 8/24, warrants were requested for Rodney Dean Halterman of Jefferson for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, failure to affix drug tax stamp, theft- fourth degree and possession of drug paraphernalia*.
Saturday, Oct. 6: At 6:19 pm an officer was dispatched to Wild Rose Casino for a report of a burglary to a patron’s vehicle in the parking lot. The complainant reported his vehicle had been entered while in the parking lot and a checkbook taken. The officer investigated and a suspect was found. A warrant was issued for Anthony Charles Lange of Ankeny for burglary- third degree (motor vehicle)*. At 9:31 pm an officer conducted a traffic stop in 1200 block of E. Lincoln Way. As a result of the stop Jeremy Hamilton of Scranton was arrested for operating while under the influence- first offense*. He was also cited for speed and failure to display registration plate. At 11:20 pm a complainant reported an erratic driver westbound on Highway 30 near R Ave. east of Jefferson. An officer located the driver on Highway 30 just west of N. Elm St. The officer stopped the vehicle and as a result of his investigation Judy Ann Richardson of West Des Moines was arrested for OWI- second offense*. She was also cited for failure to provide proof of financial liability.
Friday, Oct. 5: At 12:12 pm an officer heard loud yelling and cursing coming from a residence in the 100 block of E. Monroe St. The officer followed the sound and spoke with the source, identified as Steven Dzuris. Dzuris had been warned for this behavior approximately 45 minutes earlier by another officer. The result of the investigation led to the arrest of Steven Logan Dzuris of Jefferson for disorderly conduct*. At 3:33 pm a complainant reported vandalism to a vehicle while parked at Regency Park Nursing & Rehab. The officer is investigating. At 4:28 pm Nicki Studyvin reported her 2008 Ford Edge had been backed into while it was legally parked facing west in the parking lot at Casey’s General Store. Damage to the center of the rear bumper was estimated at $500. Studyvin reported the other driver turned north on Elm St. She photographed the registration plate of the Chevrolet Equinox she suspected of striking her vehicle. The officer knows the owner of the vehicle and is investigating who the driver was. At 8:52 pm Alise Palmer reported her vehicle was stuck in a ditch near the intersection of County Road E-53 and Linwood Ave on the west side of Jefferson. The vehicle was not damaged. Palmer was cited for driving while suspended and failure to have insurance.
Thursday, Oct. 4: At 11:36 am a complainant reported illegal dumping in the 500 block of E. Lincoln Way.
Wednesday, Oct. 3: At 11:54 am a complainant reported a theft at 1301 N. Elm St. An officer is investigating. At 4:57 pm an officer responded to Casey’s General Store for a gas drive off. An officer is investigating. At 8:33 pm an officer attempted to stop a vehicle at the intersection of S. Elm Street and W. Russell Sts because the vehicle was being driven carelessly. The driver did not yield to the officer’s emergency lights and continued south out of town.
The driver did not stop until he reached the intersection of Highway 4 and 270th St. The driver, Zachary Burbank of Jefferson, was cited for excessive speed and reckless driving. At 8:48 pm an officer responded to a residence in the 500 block of W Washington St for a trespassing complaint.
Tuesday, Oct. 2: At 8:02 am a complainant reported her vehicle had been egged overnight while parked in the 500 block of W. State St. The officer developed two juvenile suspects and charges for criminal mischief are pending the completion of the investigation. At 8:22 am a resident turned in a bag of coins she had located at the laundromat in Jefferson. They can be claimed at the LEC if the bag can be described. At 5:20 pm a complainant spoke with an officer about a possible identity theft against him. The officer is investigating.
Monday, Oct. 1: At 4:12 pm while on patrol an officer witnessed a male juvenile smoking in a vehicle. The officer followed the juvenile to the Community Center, where he parked the vehicle. The officer made contact with the juvenile, who admitted to smoking a cigarette. During a consent search the officer located a smoking device on the juvenile, believed to be used for narcotics. The officer seized the item for lab testing. Future juvenile charges are pending lab results. At 8:52 pm a complainant reported a large group of juveniles running through yards in the 300 block of Grauer St. The officer was already speaking to the group about throwing toilet paper at the high school. At 9:21 pm a complainant reported numerous cars speeding and passing unsafely on Westwood Drive. The officer checked the area and did not locate the reported actions. At 10:30 pm a complainant reported juveniles throwing toile paper in the 300 block of Edgewood. The officer did not locate anyone in the area. At 10:44 pm an officer spoke to a group of juveniles in the 300 block of W. Harrison St about curfew hours. The students under 18 headed home for the evening.
